For my third concentration piece I decided to go smaller and draw the Tobacco&Mule building in downtown apex. I started with the bricks in the building and was really happy with the colors I used. I liked how it looked until i started adding the windows. Usually i use a ruler and take the time to measure everything out, but this time I just sketched it out and started. I also wish that i had added more clouds and a brighter back ground. Now it looks dull. One thing that i was happy with was my use of blue. I usually use black for shadows, but i decided to only use blue.
For my second concentration piece I wanted to do prismacolor just to see what I could do. I decided to do Anna’s pizza because of how colorful it is, and because it is on a corner which would make for a more interesting perspective. I started off by filling in all of the red on the walls, and going in with a red brown to use as shadows. Since you could hardly see the bricks in the photo, I decided to outline only some bricks instead of trying to measure out every brick so it looked perfect. The most challenging part of this piece was doing the blinds in the windows. The finished windows look fine, but I wish they were neater. My favorite part is the awning in front of the building. Instead of making the white panels white, they’re almost pink with red shadows. Other than the messy windows, I am happy with the finished piece.
For my first concentration piece, I decided to do an oil painting of the Halle in downtown apex. I took the photo I used as a reference as the sun was going down, so it made everything have a bluish tint. I started off by painting the outside of the Halle, but I later realized I should have done the back ground first. I’m happy with how the building looks, but I think I need to lighten up the sky or darken the building so they don’t blend together. I also need to make the sidewalk infront of the Halle a little darker so it looks like it was taken when it was darker out. The only other thing I need to do is pull more red through the piece so the building on the left doesn’t stand out. Overall I am happy with the way this piece turned out. I really like how the yellows and blues look and I am going to try to keep using those colors in my paintings.
For This project we had to draw a lifelike skeleton in detail. the purpose of this was to make sure that everything was in proportion. The first difficulty I had was with the skull. I couldn't get the shape of the eye sockets right, and i couldn't make the jaw the right size. I also struggled to make the mouth not look like it was smiling. It was also difficult to get the shape of the rib cage right. Overall Im not very happy with the way it turned out, but it did help me better understand the proportions of the human body.
For this project we had a classmate model while we drew them in charcoal. The point of the exercise was to draw loosely and avoid details. We were trying to get the shapes and proportions right. The picture on the right is my worst. The proportions are way off and so are the body shapes. It was difficult for me to do the less detailed drawings and just see the shapes. The one on the right is my best. While the head is still a little too big for the body, it is more proportional than any of the others that I did. this is because I took my time and payed attention so how big body parts were in relation to others. While doing these I realized it is hard for me to work loosely without making everything look messy.
LandscapeFor the landscape project I chose to do a waterfall I visited over summer. I chose to do it because I had never done water like this and it's one of my favorite places. I was really happy with how the rocks turned out but I had difficulty with the water. At first it was 100% white so it just looked like I forgot to paint the middle so I went back and tried to add darker values. The trees were also difficult. It was hard to make it look like leaves, so I ended up dabbing paint on. It was hard to show the areas where the light was hitting the leaves, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out.
Pet PortraitFor this project I decided I wanted to do my dog in oils because I have never painted fur before and wanted to try it. With more practice it would look better, but I'm happy with how it looks. The sunglasses were just brown in the picture, but I wanted to try to use bright colors so the painting wasn't just all brown. I decided to do green for the background because I thought it would contrast nicely with the red glasses. One of the hardest parts was the texture in the nose. I tried dabbing the paint, but it just made a mess so I made his nose smooth. The colors and proportions are slightly off, but I'm happy with how it turned out.
Mixed mediaFor this project we worked with our mentees to create a collage. We started by just pasting down random pieces then tried to tie it all together. Since it started out so random it was hard to make everything go. We ended up using lines of ribbon and palate to bring the different sections together. It was hard to find interesting small pieces, and after this project I am not a fan of collages.
Color pencil challengeFor the color pencil challenge we had to pick a piece of the picture to do in prisma. I like the pumpkins but the flowers were challenging. If I could do it again I would cut out the flowers or do them in a different color. I might also go a little bigger.
For this project we had to do a self portrait. I decided that instead of working on a realistic piece I wanted to play with the colors. I wanted to use complementary colors so I used green and red then I used blue for the rest of the skin because I liked the way it looked with the red. It was difficult to get the nose to look correct because of the angle the photo was taken. It was also difficult to show shadows only using blue. By the end it had 15 layers of paint on it, but I'm happy with the result. |
