For this project we had to do nature turned mechanical. I knew I wanted to do an animal, but when I tried to ado a dog it looked too cartoon like. I thought of chameleons because they move in kind of a robotic way. I was really happy with the chameleon, but I didn't know what to do in the background. I decided to do pipes that looked kindof like trees. If I could go back I would have made metal leaves and a more interesting background, but overall I'm happy with the concept and how the piece came out. I'm also glad I got a chance to work with pencil again because it is my favorite medium.
My mentee is Megan. We talked about why we are taking art and our favorite mediums.
Their blog link is megan-apex-2017.weebly.com What I find most interesting about Megan is her reason for taking art. For this project we had to choose an interior space and make it interesting. I struggled coming up with an idea, and decided to do bees in a beehive. I decided to use oil because I wanted more practice after the last project. I had difficulty making the yellow spaces stand out against the background, so I went in and added the highlights to each hole. After that it was hard to make the bees stand out so I went in with purple. I wish I would have used red or pink because the purple mixed with the yellow and turned muddy, but overall I am happy with my piece.
For this project we drew Dum Dums. It was difficult to get the highlights to stand out so it looked dimensional. The hardest part was the words and designs. If I were to do it again I would add highlights and darks to the words so they look better. Working on this project helped me better understand how to work with prismacolors.
To practice oils we tried to paint apples from life. This was my first time using oils, and it was more difficult than I was expecting. I was used to acrylic so I ended up over blending. In the end I ended up really liking oils and how you can blend on the canvas.
